Air Canada and Continental Airlines have recently been granted initial approval to fly in and out of Toronto’s Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA). Until recently, Porter Airlines has been the sole carrier at the airport.

During a session with the carriers, Airport Coordination Limited, an independent consultancy firm expert in demand and capacity assessment and scheduling process management, allocated the 90 available BBTCA slots among the three carriers. ACL allocated the slots as follows: Porter Airlines, 44 slots; Air Canada, 30 slots; Continental Airlines, 16 slots.

As the offering grows at the airport, business travel to and from Toronto’s downtown will be offered increased destination options for outbound travel, increased opportunity for direct inbound travel to Toronto’s city centre, and competitive pricing.

“Although Canada wasn’t hit as hard as other countries by the global recession, business travel was impacted here and is now getting back on track,” says Nikki Germany, Managing Director of travel management company Egencia Canada. “The addition of two airlines to the city centre airport will allow more people to conveniently and quickly access the downtown core and open up new routes for all business travellers.”

Earlier this year, the Toronto Port Authority announced that it had initiated a process to bring forth Public-Private Partnership proposals to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a pedestrian tunnel connecting to the BBTCA. The first public meeting was held on March 24, 2010, with the second meeting scheduled to take place in the coming months to give the general public additional opportunities for input before any construction commences.
